Pet Heartworm Preventatives & Treatment in Loxahatchee, FL

The most prevalent parasite infection of the canine circulatory system is heartworm. Fortunately, it can be easily avoided, and natural remedies can be used with conventional medications when treatment is required. Heartworm is more frequently detected in dogs, though it can also infect cats.

While outdoor activity has various advantages, it also increases the risk of heartworm infection in dogs. This is not to say that dogs are fully safe inside. Simply put, increased exposure to the outdoors raises the risk of heartworm infection.

Heartworm is transmitted to dogs by mosquito bites. In Ohio, the presence of mosquitoes during the spring, summer, and early fall months increases your dog’s risk of contracting heartworms. When a heartworm infestation occurs, it is potentially fatal. As a result, we intend to implement a preventive program before your dog is exposed.

The FDA has approved several heartworm medications for dogs; the bulk of these medications involve arsenic, which is efficient at eliminating adult heartworms. Additionally, several medications can remove microfilariae from your pet’s bloodstream.

4DX Testing for Dogs

A quick blood test performed in-house called the 4DX test gives us a wealth of knowledge about your dog. Since it is intended to be a screening test, it can assist in identifying infections linked to a number of disorders in dogs who initially appear to be healthy. Eight minutes and a few blood drops will enable us to assess whether your pet has been exposed to:

  • Dirofilaria immitis (heartworms)
  • Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease)
  • Anaplasma phagocytophilum/platys (anaplasmosis)
  • Ehrlichia canis/ewingii (Ehrlichosis)

This is the only available test that allows us to effectively screen our pet patients for six diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks.
